The author received his secondary education at the Brisbane Boys' College, and graduated Bachelor of Arts (politics, history, and German language) at the University of Queensland in 1958, followed by Bachelor of Laws at the same university in 1959. He was admitted as a barrister-at-law of the Supreme Court of Queensland in 1959.

James Bowen is a co-founder of the national Battle for Australia Commemoration (1967-1999) and convener of the Battle for Australia Historical Society. He is a published author, whose career has included service as a senior Crown Prosecutor, an Army officer (1967-1974), a senior public servant, and honorary public policy consultant to national bodies such as the RSL. He graduated in politics, Far Eastern history, and law from the University of Queensland. He writes Pacific War history and and has a special interest in the dynamics of the Pacific War 1941-43.
